Father’s Day

My wife, Connie, and I have four sons so Mother’s and Father’s Day are pretty busy holidays for our family.

Per their usual routine in the summer, the boys rose late on Father’s Day this year but before they could wedge any cereal into their mouths, they wanted to know if it was time to open my presents yet. “We really got you this year, Dad. You won’t believe it.” Of course, I figured that I was set to receive a nice green neck-tie with a big white “S” on it to go with our MSU fight song playing bottle opener (two of the four are at MSU).

Connie shooed them away and off we went on our bike ride. Finally, after dinner it was time for my Father’s Day presents. After the very much appreciated water bottles and socks (what cycling family doesn’t need new water bottles & socks?), it was time for the big present. “We nailed you this year, Dad.”

The “big” present was simply an envelope; an envelope with tickets to the Van Morrison show at the Fox Theater in Detroit!

Now, I have to admit that I have said on any number of occasions that I would pretty much do anything to have a chance to see Van Morrison in concert. “How did you get these? I didn’t even know he was going to be in Detroit!”. “I bought them on-line. I get (some kind of) email alert about upcoming shows and saw that Van was playing at the Fox so I jumped on it as soon as they started selling the tickets” replied the ring leader.

And then it hit me. How would I have felt if “first come - first serve” he would have had to put his name into a lottery and not gotten the tickets? Rotten is how I would have felt. So we’re going back to our rock n’ roll roots for 2009 and the 2008 Iceman registration lottery system is dead.
On-line registration for the 2009 Iceman will open at 7:00 PM on Friday February 27th.

No bells, no whistles, no hoops to jump through; just first come first serve.

PS: Van, the Man, was amazing!

Party-On Dudes + Dudettes!

We’ve heard from a number of people who had started a tradition of having a New Year’s Eve Iceman Registration Party only to have to scrap that new tradition in 2008. So with the new streamlined registration process, you can party on again!

The only problem with that is I can’t stay up until Midnight anymore so we’ve moved the party time to 7:00 PM on Friday, February 27th. Invite yourself over to your training partner’s house (just be sure to bring your libation of choice) so you can get the whole gang signed up and party-on.

The limit is 2,500 riders combined for both the Meijer Slush Cup and the Iceman so the window for entering the 2009 event won’t be open very long. You’ll also notice that there is not a 2009 paper Iceman entry form to be found in the Glacier Gazette as all registrations will take place on-line. If you don’t have access to the Internet at home, find somebody that does so you don’t get left behind.
