Welcome!
Somewhere, and I am really not sure where, I heard that the Walt Disney Company follows a rule of management that seems a bit contrarian, "If it's not broken, break it".
The 2010 Iceman Cometh Challenge has definitely followed that rule this year as we have switched up the way in which we are going to do a number of things this year.
First, there was (and still is) the change from ability and age based categories to simply age based categories. The ability and age based categories evolved over the years starting when Iceman was still a NORBA sanctioned event. With the sheer size of last year's event, using those categories and basing the starting wave order from them simply was not the fairest, nor the most efficient means to start the race. So past Iceman results will be the start wave criteria this year. You can find the details on the 2010 wave starts on the Start page.
Back in March, while noodling around the concept of the "Ice Capades Celebration Zone", I had an epiphany... why not conduct the Iceman and Meijer Slush Cup awards throughout the afternoon right at Timber Ridge? We have always presented the Sno-Cone participants' medals to all of the youngsters right at the finish line so why not extend that courtesy to the bigger kids and adults as well? Our partners, Merrell and BISSELL, are supportive of the active cycling lifestyle and are excited to be part of the biggest cycling celebration this side of the Mississippi River. Check it out on the Slush Cup page.
Last year was the first time we offered bus transportation to the remote parking lot at East Middle School as part of the Iceman experience and the new buses were a huge hit! Thus, we are expanding the bus schedule to include buses TO Kalkaska in the morning FROM Grand Traverse Resort & Spa (bikes will tag along in a Penske Truck) as well as buses TO Timber Ridge FROM the Village of Kalkaska. Why bother with driving and parking when you can take a bus and swap cycling lies at the same time? A partial bus schedule is on the Finish Venue page.
Okay, okay, maybe not everything has changed. We've still got packet pick-up and the Ice Cycle Expo slated for Governor's Hall on Friday night, 98% of the course is unchanged, and the finish line is still located at Timber Ridge. Keep riding and we'll see you in a couple short months; just don't apply that Disney concept to your bike!
Happy trails,
